Janet Miller, CP

2016-2017

Janet Miller, CP was born and raised in Redfield, South Dakota. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice from South Dakota State University. While living in the Minneapolis area, she received an Associate of Science Degree in Paralegal Studies from North Hennepin Community College. Janet worked as a paralegal at a personal injury firm in the Twin Cities area for over fifteen years. In 2007, Janet returned to South Dakota and began working as a general practice paralegal at Siegel, Barnett, & Schutz, LLP. Janet has two children, Emily and Matt. In her spare time, Janet enjoys traveling, spending time with her family as well as bicycling. Contact Janet.
First Vice President
Jessica Huyck, ACP, obtained her college degree in Paralegal Studies from Colorado Technical University in 2010, graduating with highest honors. She earned her Certified Paralegal (CP) status from the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) in 2011 and her Advanced Certified Paralegal (ACP) status from NALA in 2013 in the specialty area of commercial bankruptcy.  Jessica worked as a paralegal for a general practice law firm in Brookings following her graduation in 2010 and until the start of 2014, at which time she began her employment with South Dakota State University as a Legal Affairs Specialist in the Office of University Counsel.  Jessica has been a member of SDPA since 2009 and has served on various committees within the organization, including the Education Committee, Public Relations Committee and Website Committee. She successfully completed SDPA's Leadership Academy in 2014-2015. She also regularly volunteers through many aspects of her community, including her various roles with the First United Methodist Church of Brookings.  Spending time with her husband and three young daughters is Jessica’s favorite thing to do when she’s not at the office. Second Vice President

Jennifer X. Frederick, CP graduated from SDSU in 2001 with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology. She spent over twelve years with Spears Law Office, PC, during which she earned the “Certified Paralegal” designation from NALA, and assisted with a successful Circuit Court Judge campaign.  In 2015, she worked a short time at the Law Office and Mediation Center of Ronald Frauenshuh, until accepting a position with Schoenbeck Law, PC.  Jen joined SDPA in 2007, and was an inaugural member of SDPA’s 360⁰ Leadership Academy.  Jen was awarded by her peers with the 2011/2012 SDPA Outstanding Member of the Year, and she has remained active in SDPA, currently serving as co-chair on the Newsletter Committee.  Jen is active in various community organizations, but what she enjoys most is spending time with her husband and precious grandson. Kristi Wood is a legal assistant at the law firm of Gunderson, Palmer, Nelson & Ashmore, LLP in Rapid City where she has worked for the past 10 years.  She works primarily in the area of insurance defense.  Kristi attended Western Dakota Tech where she earned her associates degree is paralegal studies in 2011.  In her spare time, she enjoys traveling with her husband Erin and spending time with their new daughter. Treasurer

Ms. Tasha Altmann is the Certified Paralegal of the Legal Department of Missouri River Energy Services (MRES). She is responsible for providing and performing internal legal services, administrative assistance and secretarial/clerical support activities, maintaining confidential information to protect MRES and member interests, mitigate risk, identifying and preserving valuable work product, facilitate the access to and integrity of key operating information, and contain costs. She is also a Records Administrator for MRES. In this role, she is responsible for managing the organization’s records-- hard-copy and electronic -- within the Electronic Content Management system software. This involves updating the Record Retention Schedule to meet business needs, as well as the disposition of MRES records once they have reached their retention period. Before joining MRES, Tasha worked as a Legal Secretary for Crew & Crew Law Firm of Sioux Falls, S.D., for four years. She joined MRES in February 2006 as an Administrative Assistant for the Member & Public Relations department. In December, 2006, MRES created its Legal Department within the organization and Tasha transferred from the Member & Public Relations Department to the Legal Department shortly thereafter. In April 2010, MRES promoted her and officially changed her title to “Paralegal.” Tasha earned her CP designation in September 2010. In 2014, Tasha pursued another venture in conjunction with her Paralegal career, and received her license in Real Estate. So while having a full time position as a Paralegal, she currently also works as a Broker Associate for Keller Williams Realty, Sioux Falls. Tasha received an Associates of Applied Science degree in Paralegal/Legal Assistant from Nettleton Career College in 1997. Member (active), South Dakota Paralegal Association, 2007-Present; Member of Ethics Committee -2014-Present; SDPA Treasurer; Member (active), National Association of Legal Assistants 2010-Present; and Member ARMA International, 2009-2013. NALA Liaison

Vicki Blake, CP works with Drew Duncan and William D. Sims at the Zimmer, Duncan & Cole, LLP law firm in their Sioux Falls office.  She has been with the firm for seven years.  She obtained her NALA paralegal certification in 2007.  Vicki has served in various positions for the SDPA including Membership Chair, Ethics Chair, Nominations Chair, Education Committee and now NALA Liaison.   She organizes the monthly lunch speakers for the Sioux Falls area and has participated in a number of public relations activities including Habitat for Humanity Women Build Day, gift wrapping at the Empire Mall, and the Valentine cookie project.   She is also a member of the Second Circuit Women in Law and the South Dakota Trial Lawyer’s Association.  Her primary areas of practice include criminal law, family law, personal injury, regulatory law and governmental law.  Vicki has worked in the paralegal profession for nearly 30 years at various firms and has mentored many new law firm employees throughout her years.
