East River Legal Services (ERLS) is a non-profit law firm that provides free civil legal aid to low-income individuals in the thirty-three (33) eastern South Dakota counties. ERLS is seeking a professional, experienced, and intelligent Paralegal with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to assist with a variety of poverty law caseload pertaining to victims of crime. We are looking for an individual who is highly organized, punctual, and capable of accepting direction from various attorneys and other staff. This is a newly created position under the program’s recent Victim of Crimes Grant.

General Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Paralegal assists attorneys in maintaining a large and varied poverty law caseload that may contain family law focusing on domestic violence, housing law, administrative law including most government benefits, elder law, veteran’s rights issues and other substantive areas as assigned by the Executive Director based on program’s priorities. The Paralegal also handles casework under attorney supervision that may include client contact, preliminary pleading preparation, research, file maintenance, representing clients at administrative hearings, conducting outreach, coordinating pro bono efforts and working with support staff.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Prepares tentative drafts, letters, memoranda, pleadings, motions, discovery documents, findings of fact, conclusions of law orders, and other legal documents in connection with casework

Attends hearings as requested

Conducts legal research in various areas assigned

Obtains legal reference materials and files legal documents

Maintains a caseload in assigned substantive area

Interviews applicants, clients and witnesses

Coordinates, conducts and/or participates in community outreach events

Refers clients and advocates to non-legal resources available in the community

Completes special assignments relating to legal actions as assigned

Keeps informed of new rules, regulations, and legislation pertinent to the organization.

Performs all other duties as may be requested

Competence Required:

Knowledge of legal principles and legal research methods

Knowledge of the scope and character of state and federal law related to assigned substantive area and range of responsibility

Type minimum of 50 wpm

Excellent computer skills with use of Microsoft products preferred

Pro Bono Coordinator – Sioux Falls

ERLS is seeking a Pro Bono Coordinator to oversee its volunteer program, including the recruitment, retention, and mentorship of volunteers, management of legal clinics, placement of cases, and recognition of the impact our volunteers have within our community. Responsibilities also include coordination of new pro bono initiatives.

This is a new position at ERLS and is currently a contract position. It is hope that if successful, the position will become a full-time, regular position.


General Responsibilities

Develop pro bono relationships with law firms, corporations, and educational institutions, including meeting regularly with pro bono liaisons and contacts to coordinate recruitment of volunteer attorneys, paralegals, and interpreters.

Collaborate with our program staff to place cases and organize training, mentorship, and recognition events.

Coordinate work of volunteers, including responding to volunteer inquiries/requests and maintaining regular contact with volunteers regarding the status of their cases.

Collect and analyze volunteer data and assist in developing marketing materials.

Organize and attend community legal clinics, outreach events, and legal workshops and clinics.

Coordinate new pro bono initiatives, as needed, including the design, implementation, and evaluation of initiatives and development of collaborations with community and pro bono allies.
