The Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s Office, Pierre, South Dakota has an opening for a Legal Assistant (Office Automation).  This individual will support the Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) by providing a variety of legal assistance and office support services.  Duties include: examining, preparing and processing a variety of technical legal documents; providing assistance to attorneys in trial preparation; assembling exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents; assembling and organizing files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository; Maintaining calendar of assigned active cases; tracking, filing, hearing and trial dates, and scheduling conference and interviews; arranging travel by preparing itinerary and securing transportation and hotel reservations; and producing a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applications.

 

Qualifications:  Must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level.  This specialized experience is defined as: experience providing assistance to attorneys by preparing complaints, motion, subpoenas, orders, or other hearing and/or trial documents accurately and in proper format; verifying citations and statutory references contained in legal documents; assisting with discovery, hearing or trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists; and using automated software to produce legal related reports and documents, including tables of contents and indices to briefs.  Must also type at least 40 words-per-minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors.  (A typing test may later be required.)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide secretarial support for multiple attorneys in busy

   Benefits/ERISA/Tax practice

• Finalize and electronically file pleadings, motions, and

   exhibits in federal and tax courts

• Prepare/revise correspondence, contracts, discovery,

   litigation pleadings, legal briefs and other documents as

   delegated

• Analyze and organize documents and data from materials

   produced during discovery; coordinate document productions;

   conduct privilege reviews

• Prepare deposition and record subpoenas according to code;

SKILLS AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Litigation experience is a plus, preferably in employment law

• Knowledge of both state and federal court systems/agency rules/

   electronic filing procedures

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

• Ability to work independently under pressure and multi-task

• Professional, reliable, high attention to detail and can-do attitude

• Proficient in MS Office Suite and prior experience with a document

   management system is preferred

• Punctual with excellent attendance and flexibility to work overtime
